Roy Hawkins, Jr. is an American artist, model, activist, and educator from Brownsville, Tennessee. In addition to degrees in Studio Art and Art Education, Roy has studied art and digital photography at Pallazzi Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy, where he participated in his first international exhibit – “A Nod is as Good as a Wink.” He has been featured in eight art shows, including his most recent collection, “Vision from Heaven,” which is a series of [acrylic] paintings with a religious theme where each painting has a 3-dimensional element.
“My intentions are to produce art that expresses an absolute consciousness of what surrounds me; I am influenced by everything that I see, hear, feel and experience,” Roy says.
“I have loved art and have been drawing since 1st grade. I used my artistic abilities to make friends throughout school,” Roy says. “Although I love making art, I just began painting a few years ago. Painting was never my strong medium to use. I preferred using pastels, charcoal, pencil and other dry mediums that I could manipulate with my fingers. I began painting primarily in 2012 when I began going through several personal crisis. Painting became a cathartic experience which allowed me to work through stress.”
Roy attended the University of Tennessee at Martin, and received his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio in 2001, before going on to attend the University of Memphis, where he received his MAT in Art Education, Master’s of Science in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership, and a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Computer Applications. Roy is a proud Haywood County native and currently teaches art in Haywood County Schools.
Philosophy of Education:
“I believe that every child has the capacity to learn and it is our responsibility to teach them. I use the word “our” in reference to parents, the community, and teachers. Arts education allows students to use their creativity in expressing their uniqueness. According to research, schools with a well-structured arts education program enhances the emotional well-being of children and their readiness for learning. Multiculturalism in art education is imperative because our culture is the product of various ethnic , racial, and religious groups. As an art teacher I feel that the cultural backgrounds of students should be incorporated within lessons and used as tools for understanding these various cultures. Our charge as art educators is to help each individual student to use their creativity to the best of his or her ability regardless of their socioeconomic background or culture.”
